Black Gold

Solange Azagury-Partridge Primary Ring – Blue and yellow sapphire and ruby ring set in blackened 18k white gold
Various colours of gold have ebbed and flowed throughout jewelry’s history: white gold and platinum in the 1920s, rose gold during the Retro era, yellow gold during the 1960s, 70s and 80s, and white gold in the 1990s and 2000s. Recently, yellow and rose gold have grown back into favour, with black gold not far behind.

Mimi So Pyramid Ring – Tsavorite and diamond in 18k oxidized gold
Advancements in technology and experimentation led to the ‘invention’ of black gold about 25 years ago. The process of blackening gold with surface treatment such as electroplating with black rhodium or controlled oxidation of gold containing chromium or cobalt has made production easier and more feasible.

Today, black gold is almost as ubiquitous as gold’s more traditional hues.
