Australia's Merlin Diamond Mine

The Merlin mine leaped to fame several years ago as the home of Australia’s biggest diamond find, a 104 carat stone. Merlin was an open-pit operation from 1998 to 2003, having produced 507,000 carats of diamonds. Merlin Diamonds Pty Ltd, (ASX: MED) formerly North Australian Diamonds, acquired the project from Rio Tinto in 2004.

The mine is still producing big diamonds, a 35.26 carat diamond was found there in January. The company completed a financing of $5.5 million in March this year.

Merlin also produced a rare blue diamond in December.
The Merlin Diamond Mine has yielded five ultra-rare green diamonds, the largest of which weighs 1.42 carats. The green diamond revelations are the latest in a string of good news for the mining operation.
