Bonhams Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction 2015

1995 Ducati Supermono
On January 8th, 2015 at Bally’s Hotel & Casino on The Strip, Bonhams will auction consignments of important motorcycles.
A 1971 Ducati Desmo 450 “Silver Shotgun” and 1995 Ducati Supermono will be stars. Created at the zenith of Ducati’s final years of single production, the Desmo 450 is the most powerful first run of Silver Shotgun bikes. The powerful Italian cafĂ© racer is very uncommon in America. The innovative Supermono racer, with only 67 examples built in its three-year period, is even rarer and one of the most collectible models.
Several motorcycles from the estate of the late actor Dennis Hopper, such as a 2003 Indian Chief and a 2006 Harley-Davidson VRSC “V-Rod” will also be on offer. And, in keeping with the inseparable link forged in the public eye between Hopper and his Easy Rider co-star, a special edition 2007 MV Agusta F4-1000R superbike has been consigned by Peter Fonda.

Ethiopian Welo Opals

In the early 1990s a new type of opal surfaced in Mezezo Ethiopia which was called chocolate opal because of the chocolate colour inside the nodule. These opals are found in a round nodular form with in a 3 meter thick layer of welded volcanic ash. Only about 1% of these nodules contain colour. The colours are striking with red being common and blue rare which is the opposite to Australian opals. It has some magnificent patterns and brilliant colours and is called Ethiopian fire opal.
A newly discovered Ethiopian opal was found in Gondar which was at first called desert opal but it is from a plateau in the highlands. The main field which is creating a lot of excitement now is from a field called Welo. This is found in a plateau 2500 to 3299 meters. Only the locals are allowed to mine this field. They work the horizontal level of steep mountains.
Ethiopia Is considered one of the oldest inhabited human areas on the planet. The Awash Valley has one of the most complete preserved Australopithecine fossils around 3.2 million years old.

'Blue Moon' Diamond at L.A. Natural History Museum

The “Blue Moon” diamond will make its first public appearance at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County in an exhibition from September 13 through January 6.

The 12 carat cushion-cut stone is rated “fancy vivid” with an “internally flawless” clarity from the Gemological Institute of America.
The Blue Moon was cut from a 29.62-carat rough diamond unearthed at the Cullinan mine in South Africa in January. The mine is known for producing blue diamonds, but these gems still account for less than 0.1 percent of its total diamond output.
