World's Most Toxic Places

The Aral Sea, located in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, was one of the world's four largest lakes until the waters that fed it were diverted for Soviet Union irrigation projects. By 2007, the Aral Sea shrank 90% and split into four basins.

Toxic chemicals from weapons testing, industrial projects, pesticides, and fertilizer have runoff and been swept by winds into surrounding areas. People nearby not only suffer from lack of fresh water but also cancer, lung disease, digestive disorders, antibiotic resistant tuberculosis, liver, eye, and kidney disorders, and unusually high mortality rates. Salt from the lake toxic and has a higher salinity than sea water, with levels from what remains of the South Aral measured in excess of 100g/L versus sea water salinity of 35 g/L.

The plains of what used to be the waters of the Aral Sea are exposed, causing toxic dust storms.

La Oroya is a mining town located in the Peruvian Andes. Since 1922, those living in La Oroya have breathed in toxic emissions and lived in toxic waste created by the poly-metallic smelter plant owned by Doe Run Corporation. La Oroya is home to the world's most critical levels of air pollution and the highest lead blood levels known to any children on the planet.
99 percent of the children in La Oroya have blood levels which exceed acceptable limits to qualify for lead poisoning.
Dzerzhinsk is located in Nizhy Novgorod Oblast, Russia along the Oka River, about 250 miles east of Moscow.
Dzerzhinsk is the most chemically polluted place on Earth according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Once Russia's primary chemical weapons production site, Dzerzhinsk is now home to approximately 300,000 tons of chemical waste dumped between 1930 until 1998. One study found that the life expectancy for men is 42 years and 47 years for women, compliments of dioxins, sarin, leeisite, sulfur mustard, hydrogen cyanide, phosgene, lead, phenol, and other chemicals in the air and water of the city.

Water tests revealed contaminates were 17 million times higher than levels considered safe by EPA standards.
The Matanza-Riachuelo River in Argentina is 64 kilometers long and home to over 3.5 million people. The Matanza is filled with illegal sewage pipes draining directly into the river. Along Mantanza-Riachuelo's banks are 13 slums and open garbage dumps. Strong odors are released from chemical residue and methane gas.
The Kabwe is a mine located in Zambia and was long ago rendered one of the most toxic places on Earth.
Originally a mining complex, Kabwe is now a barren mess. Once reserves of lead, zinc, silver, manganese, cadmium, vanadium, and titanium were extracted, heavy metals remained behind. Tailings from the mine, primarily zinc and lead, found their way into water supplies, affecting nearly 210,000 people.
Karachay is a small lake in the Ural mountains in Western Russia.
It is home to a nuclear waste dumping site so radioactive it has been declared the most polluted place on the planet. During the early 1950s, the Soviet Union began dumping radioactive waste into Lake Karachay. Many years later, the Worldwatch Institute on nuclear waste rendered the area "the most polluted spot on Earth." Radiation levels at the lake are so high that one hour of exposure is considered lethal.
The accumulated levels of radioactivity are around 4.44 exabequerels (EBq) with 3.6 EBq of Caesium-137 and 0.74 EBq of Strontium-90. The 1986 Chernobyl disaster released between 5 to 12 Ebq of unconcentrated radioactivity.

2016 Ferrari FXX K

In December Ferrari unveiled its latest FXX-series track-only special, based on the LaFerrari hybrid supercar. The K in the new car’s moniker is a reference to the KERS kinetic energy recovery system used to maximize performance on the track.
It will be the most powerful Ferrari ever offered for sale, with a whopping 1035bhp.
848bhp of that comes from its V12 engine, while the remaining 187bhp is from an electric motor.

The FXX K also produces more than 660lb ft of torque. Like other modern Ferraris, the FXX K uses a seven-speed twin-clutch paddle-shift gearbox that can swap cogs in a fraction of a second. Price? Around $ 3m.

Cenovus Energy Inc. - CVE.t

Cenovus Energy Inc. - CVE.t operates two producing steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) projects in the oil sands – Foster Creek and Christina Lake – as well as several emerging projects, which are in various stages of development.

Foster Creek and Christina Lake are 50 percent owned by ConocoPhillips. The company also produces heavy oil from the mobile Wabiskaw formation at Pelican Lake. Cenovus has a 50 percent interest in their Wood River (Illinois) and Borger (Texas) refineries which Phillips 66 operates.

On January 29, 2015 the company released News

"Cenovus Energy Inc. (TSX: CVE) (NYSE: CVE) is further reducing its 2015 capital spending in order to preserve cash and maintain the strength of its balance sheet. The company has identified approximately $700 million in additional capital expenditures originally planned for 2015 that can be deferred until crude oil prices recover.

“We have great assets, we’re in a strong financial position and we have the flexibility in our capital plan to make these additional spending reductions without compromising strategic growth projects,” said Brian Ferguson, Cenovus President & Chief Executive Officer. “Our plan is to continue to pursue our long-term growth strategy, but at a pace we believe is more in line with the current pricing environment.”

In December 2014, Cenovus announced a 2015 capital spending budget of between $2.5 billion and $2.7 billion, an approximate 15% reduction from 2014 levels. Since December, crude oil prices have continued to weaken and the company is anticipating prices may remain low through 2015. As a result, Cenovus has revised its 2015 capital budget and is now targeting capital spending this year of between $1.8 billion and $2.0 billion. As part of its prudent approach to financial management, the company will continue to assess its spending plans on a regular basis and has the ability to make further budget adjustments, if required. In addition to capital flexibility, Cenovus continues to evaluate other corporate and financial opportunities, including generating cash from its existing portfolio."
