 | The Spaniards discovered the world's largest known emerald in the middle of the 16th century. The stone consists of two crystals grown together, and weighs 2680 carats. The Mogul Emerald dates to around 1695 and weighs 217.80 carats. One side is inscribed with Islamic prayers and the other is engraved with opulent flower ornaments. The emerald is thought to have come from the reign of Emperor Aurangzeb --the last of the great Mogul rulers. The emerald was auctioned off at Christie's of London for $2.2 million in 2001. |  |
 | An enormous blue sapphire appeared at Christie’s Magnificent Jewels sale on May 19th, 2004, at Geneva. The jewel was not advertised as the Blue Giant of the Orient, but the size, cut, and color were similar, and it is thought to be the same gem. The jewel in the auction was 486.52 carats, and became the largest faceted sapphire of quality ever offered at auction. |  |
